Teaching Approach and Course Structure
The course is structured around three main themes: Fashion Couture / Fast Fashion / Chinese Fashion.
The first two themes primarily focus on Western fashion:
(1) Fashion Couture
The course introduces several legendary fashion designers selected by the instructor. Students will explore their key sources of inspiration and examine the specific periods of fashion history that influenced their work, as well as how these influences evolved and shaped contemporary fashion. This approach encourages students to develop a broader and more critical understanding of the fashion industry, rather than simply studying fashion history in chronological order.
(2) Fast Fashion
Contemporary fast-fashion brands will be selected as case studies. Students will trace the historical periods and fashion styles adopted by these brands and examine how they successfully transform historical fashion aesthetics into modern, commercially viable products.
(3) Chinese Fashion
The course introduces selected Chinese dynasties and traditional garment-making techniques worthy of further exploration, allowing students to gain an understanding of the characteristics and cultural context of Chinese dress.
Theoretical / Practice Ratio: 1 : 3
The course combines foundational theoretical knowledge with case studies, critical analysis, discussion, and practical application, with a greater emphasis on applied learning.
